golden hello

A payment made to induce an employee to take up employment. The tax treatment depends on the nature of the payment; in some cases the taxpayer has successfully argued that the payment should be tax-free. However, in 1991 the House of Lords ruled that a payment made to a well-known footballer by a football club, as an inducement to join a new club, was taxable.
